Why Kevin & Kell?

As you see, the illustration on this page is a blatant advertisement for the on-line comic strip “Kevin & Kell.” K&K exists only on-line, so it’s not going to turn up in your daily newspaper. Don’t suppose for one minute that I’m clever enough to add the picture to my page. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my html mentor, who still has a lot of teaching to do.

I always liked comic strips that poke gentle fun at society, and there are many like that – “For Better or Worse,” “Herb and Jamaal,” “Zits,” “Hi and Lois” and “Beetle Bailey.” (Those last two go together; Beetle is Lois’ brother.) “Peanuts” and “Pogo” used to be among the best, but they lose something when the originator is gone.

Another of my favorite topics involves learning to live with the people around you, appreciating people for what they are (as opposed to what you want them to be), and putting down bullies. [Non illegitimi carborundum (don’t let the bastards wear you down), my old article about bullies, will appear one of these days.] My soapbox rant usually refuses to judge people on the basis of their religion or race, their gender, or anything else that makes them different. That is, different is not better or worse, just – different. K&K takes it one step further; they don’t discriminate on the basis of species either.

Kevin is a rabbit married to Kell, a wolf. Coney, their baby, seems to be a carnivorous bunny. Kevin’s father is just learning to tolerate Kell. Kevin’s daughter, Lindesfarn, adopted during his first marriage, is a hedgehog. They all work in internet-related business, so they don’t necessarily come into contact with their customers. Humans don’t exist except as mythology.

Of course, it all becomes very complicated. There are occasional family trees that leave you more confused than ever, and a recent “periodic table” classified all the characters by diet. If you really get interested, you’ll end up going to the beginning and reading the background. But for a jump-start, go back just to August 1 and read a little about their churches. This segment really tickled me.

Let me know if you agree.
