Farewell, Friend

One of my favorite diaries this year has been the story of Axel, a dog who takes care of his owner, whom he calls Dad. Dad (David), of course, is the typist, because a Rottie’s big paws don’t fit the keyboard too well.

Whenever there has been a lapse in the entries, we would worry that Dad was ill. Happily, he seems to be getting better, which meant some changes in Axel’s duties, although his main job has always been to be David’s guardian and pal.

It has been some time since Axel updated, but we kind of thought it was that they were all getting acclimated in a new home. And then – this morning – we got the news that Axel was the sick one and that he had to be put to sleep.

Well, I’m a pushover for a big lovable dog, and I’ve often welled up over something that Axel described. But David’s poignant entry today just did me in. G’bye, darlin’, we’ll meet again – somewhere.
